Plan Drupal 9 Migration Before It’s Too Late

Blog image

Drupal 7 will reach its end-of-life in November 2021, Drupal 9 will be released in 2020, and the 8th version will be end-of-life in November 2021.

It’s time to plan Drupal 9 migration! Discover how to do things right in our blog post.

Drupal 9 is an Extension of D8

D8 is assumed as the major shift for the Drupal community. It provided new dependencies, such as Symfony and new features in Core. Upgrade to D8 is a complicated process because it takes time to optimize and secure modules for the new version.

Dries Buytaert, the founder of Drupal, wrote a blog about plan for Drupal 9 on Drupal.org:

“Instead of working on Drupal 9 in a separate codebase, we are building D9 in D8. This means that we are adding new functionality as backwards-compatible code and experimental features. Once the code becomes stable, we deprecate any old functionality.”

That’s such great news for the community! The upgrade from D8 to D9 will be easier than previous major versions upgrades, because D9 will be an extension of the previous version.

Planned Drupal 8 and 9 minor release dates

Plan Drupal 9 Migration Today!

In November 2021, Symfony 3 (Drupal 8’s major dependency) will no longer be supported. This means that security bugs in Symfony 3 will not get fixed after November 2021. Therefore, D8 will be end-of-life as well. Your company should begin planning for D9 and creating migration roadmap no later than summer 2021 to avoid any risks.

Make sure you keep your 8th version website up-to-date to ensure painless upgrade to D9. Don’t use deprecated modules and APIs, and use the latest versions of dependencies if it is possible.
